When bass fishing, look for big flat areas around the lake and start throwing crankbaits and spinnerbaits early in the morning. Then, look for structures on the water such as submerge boulders, trees, weeds, etc.. Bass use these structures to hide in to ambush prey.
Although there are many way to catch bass, early morning and night is topwater lure time for me. This is when I like a floating bait such as rapalas, zara spook and toads & frogs in the warmer months. Look for boils around the lake when the bass are schooling and feeding on shads, then cast these topwater lures out and twitch & stop along the top of the water. When the fish goes after your bait, then you'll see why these are some of my favorite lures to use.

In the cooler months from late fall to early spring, bass are more likely to be found in the shallow water such as along the shorelines and under overhanging trees. However, when it gets warmer bass tends to move to deeper water where it is cool. This is when you need to change your strategy. This is the time for plastic worms, jigs and tubes.
Plastic worms are the most versatile bait in an anglers arsenal and the most effective lures when it comes to bass fishing. You can rig these in numbers of ways such as texas rig, carolina rig or a dropshot rig. You can fish the plastic worms fast, slow, drag them, bounce them or just plain swim them. Let the bass dictate how you fish these baits.
Good luck and enjoy your next fishing trip.
